Language Tests Accepted For Canada Immigration

If you are planning to immigrate to Canada, you need to prove language proficiency in one of Canada’s official languages – English or French. Immigrating to Canada – Who Needs To Prove Language Proficiency?

Most of the Canadian immigration programs require proof of language proficiency except spousal sponsorship and temporary immigration programs. Language tests are compulsory for all the programs aligned with Canada’s Express Entry system including PNPs. So, if Canadian permanent residence is your end goal, you have to take Canadian immigration-approved language tests and prove language proficiency.

For English:

CELPIP: Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program

  • You must take the CELPIP General test. General-LS test is not accepted for programs under Express Entry.

IELTS: International English Language Testing System

  • You must take the IELTS General test. IELTS Academic is not accepted for Express Entry immigration programs.

For French:

TEF Canada

  • The TEF (Test d’Evaluation de Français) examination for Canadian immigration consists of Oral Comprehension, Written comprehension, Oral Expression, and Written Expression. However, the TEF examination for Canadian citizenship application consists of Oral comprehension and Oral expression.

TCF Canada

  • The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) examination for Canadian immigration also includes the same modules – Oral Comprehension, Written Comprehension, Oral Expression, and Written Expression.

The test results are valid for two years, So, when you complete your Express Entry profile or apply for a PR, your test results must be less than two years old for it to be considered.

The Express Entry profile of a candidate is valid for 1 year. So, make sure that your test results are valid during that period. If the language test results expire before that, make sure you re-take the test and update your profile with the new results.
